FitKids!
Forty percent (40%) of children ages 5-8 are already exhibiting major coronary risk factors such as high blood pressure
and high cholesterol levels. With childhood obesity and its related diseases on the rise, the overall goal of a physical
and health education program should be to:
- Provide physical activity;
- Teach the definition of health;
- Teach the importance of a healthy lifestyle;
- Instill that a person is responsible for his/her own health;
- Provide the foundation (knowledge) needed to pursue a healthy lifestyle;
- Encourage the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle.
The YWCA's FitKids! program meets these goals for the children served by our programs in a fun and engaging way. The
children who participate in the program receive similar health and wellness benefits to those received by members of
our Health and Fitness Center, a facility for adult members. FitKids! helps to establish healthy habits, and addresses
the increasing demand for this type of resource from families who are concerned by their children's obesity and lack of exercise.
